CLOVIS POINT
FENN CACHE
Forrest Fenn Collection

This close-up of the base of a Clovis point shows the hafting area roughened by scratching, a procedure that apparently was done almost exclusively on obsidian. This roughening of the hafting area is thought to be helpful in better holding a Clovis point in the haft on the end of the spear or foreshaft. Obsidian was commonly used to make Clovis points in the far west where this material was available.

Clovis point Fenn cache shows scratches in hafting area.
