RAMEY TABLET
CAHOKIA MOUNDS

STATE HISTORIC SITE
MADISON--ST. CLAIR COUNTIES, ILLINOIS
COLLECTIONS OF THE MADISON COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY

This side of the Ramey tablet shows two bird heads.

They are almost identical to an engraving found on the

Spiro Mounds site. Spiro is another Mississippian site

located 350 miles to the southwest of Cahokia near Spiro,

Oklahoma. These images most closely resemble the ivory-

billed woodpecker. This broken tablet was found in the late

1800's by Thomas Ramey in his fields next to the largest

prehistoric earthen mound in North America, Monks Mound.
