A SELECTION OF CAHOKIA POINTS
BY GARY MERLIE

A selection of a variety of different styles of Cahokia points made by Gary Merlie. Included in this group are Triple-Notched, Multi-Notched, Triple-Notched Serrated and Multi-Notched Serrated points. The semi-translucent points are made of heat treated Kaolin chert from southern Illinois. The rest are made of heat treated Crescent from Missouri. Both of these cherts were used by the people living on the Cahokia Mounds site in southern Illinois to make their arrow points.

But even after Gary learned how to do percussion flaking he says he never gets tired of making Cahokia points. So as he says "it's my favorite point".

69 COLORFUL CAHOKIA POINTS
MADE BY GARY MERLIE

This beautiful selection of Cahokia points was made by Gary Merlie. The colors have been brought out of the stone by heating it in an oven. The stone is Kaolin chert from Illinois and Crescent chert from Missouri.

It's pretty obvious as Gary says "I'm a Kaolin junkie like you can't get enough of the stuff". The majority of his points are made of Kaolin chert from the old Stone Age quarry sites in southern Illinois. He says he learns more about the Kaolin quarry district every time he goes down there.

STONE PIPE MADE BY GARY MERLIE

This late style "T" pipe was made by Gary Merlie. It was made from a piece if green and red pipestone from southern Illinois.

Gary says that " it worked out well that I managed to find a source of Kaolin flint, which was one of the raw materials that, when heated, was used to make the beautiful original gempoints at Cahokia".
