These four Dalton preform tips were found during the
excavation of
the Olive Branch site in southern Illinois. They
represent failed
attempts to thin early stage preforms
longitudinally by detaching a channel or flute flake from the
base by
percussion flaking.
The longest example, second from the left still
has the
channel flake attached to the preform. It measures 2 15/16
inches (7.5 cm) long.
