TYPE IV DANISH DAGGER MADE BY DAVE WALDORF
GLEN LEESMAN COLLECTION

This classic type IV dagger was made in 1991 by Dave Waldorf. Dave has been studying Danish daggers for many years and is one of the worlds authorities on the subject. He has developed his flintknapping skill to the point where he is now one of the few people that can make a classic type IV Danish dagger with a stitched handle. In fact, he's made well over 300 daggers of various types. He has traveled to Europe and around the United States to study collections of them. This dagger is a product of his research. It measures 10 3/16 inches (25.9cm) long.

Only a handful of people are able, today, to make a type IV Danish dagger. The skill to make one is developed over time. These elaborately styled daggers are technically one of the most difficult  Stone Age tool types to construct. The flintknappers of today are able to duplicate "just about" every flake removal technique that has been invented by humans for the past 3 million years, but as is the case with most anything, the more difficult the task the fewer are the people who can do it.

These four Danish daggers of various types were made by Dave Waldorf in 1994 and 1996. They were made from a single piece of mahogany obsidian from Oregon. Three of the daggers have "stitching" or zigzag flaking on the sides or edges. From left to right this set of daggers includes a type I, type III, type IV and a type V style of Danish dagger. The largest one measures 11 5/16 inches (28.7cm) long.
