ALPACA FIGURE
CONOPA

INCA CULTURE
NEAR CUZCO, PERU
PRIVATE COLLECTION

This heavily patinated alpaca figure conopa is

believed to be a later style. It was made before

European contact and appears to have been
laying in the ground for a number of years. This

conopa was carved in a way that enhanced and

highlighted the head area with the white color
of the stone. This additional artistic detail makes

the carving all the more esthetically satisfying

(the craftsman has good taste). This examples
measures 2 1/2 inches (6.3 cm) high and it does

have llama fat in the cavity on its back.

Inca culture alpaca figure conopa.
