This picture shows three views of a large core that

was excavated on an Aurignacian site in southern

France. The flakes were found in a small area just

where they fell thousands of years ago. Several cores

were found on this site and painstakingly refitted back

together. In some areas of the excavation the flakes left

an outline around the legs and body of the individual

that reduced the core. This core measures approximately

12 inches (31cm) long.
