FOLSOM BEAD

SHIFTING SANDS SITE, TEXAS
DEPARTMENT OF ANTHROPOLOGY, THE UNIVERSITY OF KANSAS COLL.

This small bead was found stuck to the surface of a resharpening flake that was found in Area 6 on the shifting Sands site in Texas. It likely would not have been found at all if it was laying loose in the sand. If there were other beads on this site they were probably to small to be recovered with normal excavating techniques.
Clovis people most certainly wore different types of body ornaments. Beads can be traced back in Europe to Neanderthals.
The material from which this bead was manufactured has not been identified. It is believed to be made of either ivory or bone.
An estimated date for this Folsom artifact would be approximately 11,000 years ago.
