JOHN KIERNAN AND TWO OF HIS ARROW POINTS.

All the points and eccentric flaked stone pieces on this page were made by John Kiernan. He is one of a growing number of flintknappers who are shaping pieces of stone into wonderful works of modern day art. As you can see he is becoming very adept at pressure flaking.

IN MODERN TIMES

John Kiernan became interested in stone tools around the age of 8. He grew up on a ranch on the high plains in eastern Colorado. The ranch was near the famous Olsen-Chubbuck Paleo-Indian bison kill site in Cheyenne County. Jerry Chubbuck was his neighbor. The artifacts he observed in collections and the ones he found himself has fueled an expanding interest ever since.

"ECCENTRIC" HOLLOW BASE POINT
BY JOHN KIERNAN

A stylized eccentric version of an Egyptian Hollow Base Point!

He went to college and wanted to be an archaeologist but was discouraged by friends. It's still a vocation he wants to pursue. He's now 36 and a sergeant in the Air Force with six years to go. After that he plans to return to school and finish his degree in archaeology. He wants to focus heavily on lithics studies.

"ECCENTRIC" HOLLOW BASE POINT
BY JOHN KIERNAN

Another stylized version of an Egyptian Hollow Base Point. This one is made of Knife River chert from North Dakota.

John began flintknapping several years ago but only as an "experimenting thing". He never fell for the heated rock or feather "arrowhead making" technique but he says he tried some pretty funny experiments. He believes he finally became a flintknapper about four or five years ago.

ECCENTRIC
BY JOHN KIERNAN

This one should be called "Swirling Dragon". It's made of Edwards chert from Texas.

John says he really enjoys making projectile points but, as he says, "I also like to put my own twist on things". and "I believe that knapping can be presented to the non-lithic public as art. If this can be accomplished, it will increase interest in all stone tools, modern or ancient".
